Marine Serre

Born in a small French village, with an early ambition in tennis, Marine Serre turned to fashion. She trained at Alexander McQueen, Maison Margiela, Dior, and Balenciaga before launching her own house. In 2017 she won the LVMH Prize, its youngest recipient, and the recognition came quickly.

Known for joining Islamic motifs to sportswear, and for sustainable, recycled fabrics, Serre has held the attention of Paris Fashion Week and drawn a global following. The house is now stocked internationally, and stands as a rising name in fashion.

Storytelling structured to endure

The films were commissioned by Nordstrom. The task was to hold the energy, the excitement, and the visual richness of Marine Serre’s shows in film. We wanted an audience to feel the tension before the show, the scenes behind it, and the catwalk itself: a structured view into one of the most anticipated shows of Paris Fashion Week.

For the first film, we set out to meet the otherworldly atmosphere Marine Serre already gives a runway. The tools were unconventional. We shot on iPhones, directly into the lasers of the show, which gave the footage an ethereal, almost surreal quality, and mirrored the avant-garde aesthetic of the house.

The second film looked into the dark, atmospheric rooms Marine Serre prefers for a runway. We used film cameras, known for the nuance they hold in darkness and in light. The result has texture, shadow, and substance, in the manner of those spaces.
